The KEEP Principle is a structured, cyclical teaching framework developed specifically for Approved Driving Instructors. It gives you a clear, repeatable process for planning and delivering lessons that are focused, learner-centred, and genuinely responsive to what's actually happening in the car.
KEEP replaces guesswork with purpose. Every stage of your lesson has a job to do — and KEEP makes sure you know what that job is.
Before any practical activity begins, clarity matters. This stage establishes the learning focus for the session — for you and your learner. Without it, lessons drift. With it, everything has direction.
This is where great teaching lives. Rather than instructing, you engage — asking questions, listening carefully, adapting your approach, and giving the learner real ownership of their development. Enabling transforms a passenger into an active participant.
After practice, you stop and look honestly at the evidence. What changed? What improved? What didn't? This isn't assumption — it's observation. Teaching that skips this stage is teaching on hope.
Based on what the examination revealed, you make a deliberate decision: build on what's working, or change what isn't. KEEP keeps you responsive — not rigid.
KEEP isn't a checklist you work through once and move on. It's a continuous loop — each stage informing the next, cycling throughout the lesson at both micro and macro level. The KEEP Integrity Loop illustrates this: a teaching system that's always moving, always adapting, always purposeful.
The KEEP Principle is built around the DVSA's National Standards for Driver and Rider Training. It supports the client-centred learning approach expected at Part 3 and Standards Check level — but it does something those frameworks don't always do: it gives you a simple, memorable system you can actually use in the car, in real time, under pressure.
KEEP doesn't replace what you already know. It makes it usable.
Whether you're a newly qualified ADI finding your feet, a trainer-trainer developing others, or an experienced instructor preparing for a Standards Check, KEEP gives you a framework that grows with you.
The KEEP Principle is available now as a book — From Winging It to Working It — published by Instruct IQ Ltd.
